Over 200 attendees gathered this June for the 14th Annual Global Links Business Outlook Luncheon, organized by Phoenix Sister Cities, in partnership with Arizona Forward. The luncheon this year focused on economic development and environmental sustainability.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton opened the program with remarks highlighting the importance of the city developing relationships and doing business internationally. He emphasized the role that the Phoenix Sister Cities program plays in creating economic development opportunities for businesses locally and abroad. Businesses in Phoenix have already benefited because of the city’s sister relationships. Local companies like Intel Corporation and Athlead, a sports goods manufacturing company, have already expanded business operations by leveraging existing sister city connections.
The luncheon featured local business and community leaders including Dr. Lattie Coor, CEO of the Center for the Future of Arizona and former President of Arizona State University, and Gene Seroka, President of APL Ltd. Dr. Coor outlined the Center’s agenda to make Arizona a more rewarding state to live in, focusing on civic engagement and environmental issues. Mr. Seroka shared the decision making process for APL’s relocation of their America headquarters to Phoenix — they considered the availability of a highly educated workforce, a business-friendly atmosphere, and high quality of life. He also reviewed APL’s initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of their operations.
Gina DeGraw, President of Phoenix Sister Cities, and Ralph Marchetta, President-elect, closed the event.
